Focus: What’s Around You

We are delighted to offer the next session of our super popular drawing class, The Reality of My Surroundings: Observational Drawing, with local expert Michael Ajerman.

This 4-week session, starting 28th February at The Bull’s Head pub in Barnes, will renew your passion for drawing whilst instilling a laser focus on observing your surroundings.

Observational drawing is a technique which helps you to understand and capture the way objects appears to us in a physical space whilst investigating how mass, shape, and light can affect our perception of our surroundings. Students will address these issues through focusing on still life and a life model. The class will alternate between the two for the term, working in pencil, coloured pencil, charcoal, and/or pastel pencils.

This course runs over a 4-week period, with each class focussing on a particular element:

Week 1 (28th February)

Students will pick from a wide variety of art reproductions supplied by the teacher. These pictures, from the Renaissance to Contemporary Art, supply a variety of images and compositions that the students can learn from through the process of drawing. Students will be working on one large drawing for the whole class in any medium that they want.

Week 2 (7th March)

Students will draw from a large still life, choosing to focus either on a specific item/object or from a large composition of items arranged on the tables. This will enable minor details to become monumental and forms to really be addressed. Along with the interplay of objects, the focus will hone in on making an interaction between the shapes. Students are encouraged to bring in an item or objects that they would like to draw from to add to the composition – the higher the variety of items, the better.

Week 3 (14th March)

A nude model will be present and students will incorporate the lessons learnt from the previous class whilst drawing from the human form. There will be a mixture of long and short poses.

Week 4 (21st March)

A nude model will be present and students will use the lessons learnt from the term to draw from the human form. We will be doing long and short poses.
